Project 3600 - Monastery of Vigan (Philippines)

Purchase a vehicle

In 1929, Mother Edeltraud Danner, a Benedictine missionary sister from Tutzing (Germany), left her congregation and, with the support of Mgr Santiago Sancho, founded a monastery in the Philippines, which became an abbey in 1950. The new Benedictine nuns were divided into two activities: nuns with papal enclosure and apostolic sisters working in various parishes and dioceses. After the canonical visitation in 1985 and by decree of Rome, the active sisters were granted autonomy from the abbey on 18 May 1986. Since then, two independent congregations have existed: the Benedictine Sisters of the Eucharistic King and the Benedictine Nuns of the Eucharistic King, to which Vigan (province of Ilocos) belongs. The nuns observe constitutional enclosure with an apostolate on the monastic premises of the monastery (formation of oblates, lay ministers, recollections, etc.).

A catechetical school was founded in this priory in 1964. The Saint Benedict Institute offers two training programmes: a two-year certificate in religious education, and a bachelor's degree in religious education and human values.

The community comprises twenty-four sisters.
