Project 3585 - Monastery of Umran (India)

Purchase a vehicle

The Shanti Nilayam community (OSB) in southern India founded the Umran monastery in the north-east in 1990, in a predominantly Muslim area. Initially, four sisters from Shanti Nilayam Abbey settled in the region, very poorly off, until the construction of a guest house in Umran was completed. Regular life was officially inaugurated in Umran in March 1992; the new monastery was built in 1995. The community comprises around ten sisters.

The community plays an active role in the development of the region through sustained agricultural activity: dairy farm and arable land, pig and poultry rearing, fish farming. It welcomes anyone wishing to take time out for silence, meditation and conviviality, and encourages dialogue between cultures and religions.
