Project 3548: Monastic formation for communities

The Congregation of the Benedictine Missionary Sisters of Tutzing was founded in Germany in 1885. The first foundation in Africa was established in 1888, followed in 1903 by a foundation in Brazil and then in 1906 in Manila. Today, the sisters have houses on four continents (Europe, Africa, America and Asia), in sixteen countries, with twelve priories and one hundred and twenty-eight missions.

The St Scholastica spirituality centre is attached to the priory of the same name in Manila. There are around 170 sisters in 19 communities in the Philippines. In the predominantly Catholic islands, the sisters have mainly set up schools ranging from nursery to secondary school, as well as a music conservatory in Manila. Today, thousands of students attend their courses in 25 establishments. The sisters also run a hospital. The Filipino sisters are currently stationed in almost every priory in the world, thanks to the large number of vocations in this predominantly Catholic country.

The Saint-Benoît Institute was founded at the Tagaytay spiritual centre a few years ago. For the first time in 2024, a monastic formation course was offered from 18 May to 1 June for Benedictine and Cistercian communities from the Philippines, Australia and Africa. The aim of this course is to promote monastic life in Asia and Oceania and to enable members of communities who are unable to take part in training in Europe or the United States to deepen their own monastic life. This session brought together between 50 and 60 members of the Benedictine Family, men and women, and was given by a Benedictine sister from the monastery of Ferdinand (USA). Financial help would be needed to cover the costs of the session.
