Project 3542: Participation in the Leadership course in Rome

The Benedictine monastery of Saint Joseph in Makkiyad, in the north of Kerala, was founded in 1962 by five Indian monks who chose to leave Sri Lanka to establish a monastery in India. It is part of the Sylvester congregation.

The Makkiyad priory has founded six monasteries: Vanashram (Karnataka), Iritty (Kerala), Shivpuri (Madhya Pradesh), Teok (Assam), Navajeevan (Andhra Pradesh), and Kizhakkumbhagan (Kerala) in 2022. The community comprises sixty-four brothers, including seventeen in formation.

The community is responsible for a number of educational activities through the Holy Face School and the Saint Joseph Institute of Philosophy. The community also runs a retreat centre attended by thousands of people every year.

Brother Nikhil James will be taking part in the Leadership and the Rule of St Benedict course in Rome from 30 June to 19 July 2024.

Unprecedented developments are transforming monasteries and making leadership much more demanding; this course is designed to help brothers and sisters better assume their responsibilities in community.

Financial assistance will be needed for travel and visas.
