Caxambu (Brazil) [November 2024]
Building a fence wall (continued)
Project 3641 - Monastery of Caxambu (Brazil)
Building a fence wall (continued)
Seven sisters from the Belo Horizonte abbey left to found a monastery in 1973. Until 1975, they lived in a farmhouse that had been lent to them. They then embarked on a bold project to build a monastery in a place where there were no roads, water or electricity. The water problem lasted until a benefactor offered a mine on his land and an electric pump to collect the water.
As well as its craft activities (cards, liturgical vestments, biscuits, etc.), the community has a guest house for people who want to spend some time in silence. They continue to contribute to the development of this very isolated region. In addition to running water, they have brought good practices to the region in the upkeep of natural areas and help those most in need.
Project
The project aims to build an additional 30 m of wall to replace the barbed wire fence. Despite being founded for so many years, the sisters still haven't been able to afford to build the enclosure wall, which totals 1,600m. This situation brings a lot of insecurity and tension to the community. Opportunistic people often cut through the fence, invading our privacy, taking possession of our poultry, breaking into our storerooms and taking what they find. The fence also facilitates the entry of animals: dogs, cattle, wolves, which often pass through.
Requested amount: 20,000 euros.
