On 28 May 2019, the Sylvestrine Benedictine Congregation elected Father Antony Puthenpurackal OSB of Saint Joseph’s Conventual Priory, Makkiyad, India as Abbot General.

He was professed in 1970, appointed to the General Council in 2013, and nominated Prior Administrator of the Conventual Priory of San Vincenzo, Bassano Romano (VT) in 2017.

The election took place during the General Chapter held at the monastery of San Silvestro, Montefano, Fabriano (AN), founded by Saint Sylvester in 1231. He succeeds the Right Reverend Michael Kelly OSB in this role.

Viktor Dammertz, osb, a German bishop emeritus of Augsburg, former abbot-general of the Ottilian congregation and former abbot-primate of the Benedictine confederation died on 1 March 2020 in Sankt Ottilien (Upper Bavaria) at the age of 90.

Mother Marie St-Pierre, Abbess of Notre-Dame du Bon Conseil (Archdiocese of Quebec, Canada) since 1989, having reached the age of retirement mentioned in ST 40.A of the Constitutions, presented her resignation to the Abbot General. With the consent of his Council, the Abbot General accepted the resignation which became effective on May 18, 2020.
